Tips for a successful sale!
Set a date. Do this well in advance. In the past my family has set ours around the town’s holiday weekend during the summer. With all of the yard sales nearby it isn’t a stretch for folks to stop by yours.
Decide what to sell. Purge Purge Purge! My thing is to get rid of everything we don’t need, or have too much of. With clothes, stick 1 size up and 1 size down from where you are now. Clothes that haven’t been worn in a year (or less depending on how much you own) can go. Items that don’t fit your style for whatever reason can go.
Get Help. Have friends and relatives bring items to help make it a bigger sale and a bigger draw for customers.
Collect sale items. Sort and box similar items. This will save time later when you are setting up.
Tell the world. It’s all about advertising. Put large, colorful signs on a major road. Keep them all the same color with clear directions, the address and the time. Also, take out ads in local papers. You can try listing your sale online, and posting it on any website you currently use for social networking.
Attach price tags. Clearly price everything. Put like things together. Use tables to make the viewing easier. Borrow clothing racks, and have a great layout of goods so people can see everything. This cuts down on questions, time and makes sure every item gets a good look. I know if there is no price on something I am not someone to ask or haggle so I would rather walk away.
The More the Merrier. Have your friends and family also help with setup, taking money, answering questions and general help on the day of the sale.
Be prepared. A great idea that I found is to have an extension cord so folks know your electronics work. Also use those extra plastic bags or boxes you have lying around to helps customers carry their goodies out. This will also help clear even more clutter!
Manage the money. Have a lot of small change handy not everyone has exact change.
Bargain. The idea of a yard sale is to get rid of everything. Bargain like crazy, the last day of our sales are usually a 50% off day. Less to haul back in the house!
Get rid of everything. Arrange for a charity to pick up whatever is not sold. Don’t take anything back into the house! (although I agree this is a great strategy, we have a spare room in our basement that we keep adding to during the year as out “yard sale” room. so if it doesn’t sell one year, it gets put out the next. As I get in the cleaning mood I add to the room and then price it all out the week before the sale.)
